Eating with the Ecosystem

ILLUSTRATION • LETTERING • PATTERN DESIGN

Based in Rhode Island, Eating with the Ecosystem works with marine scientists, commercial fishermen, and innovative chefs to promote a place-based approach to sustaining New England’s wild seafood

Illustration

The aim of Eating with the Ecosystem’s project is to educate people about more sustainable seafood choices within New England based on climate change trends.

To support their research project funded by NOAA, I created 12 illustrations of sea creatures along with five patterns and hand lettering. The complete bundle will be used in a variety of consumer-facing booklets and scientific papers.

Pattern Design

The inspiration for the patterns came from Newport, Rhode Island imagery: fishing nets, dock planks, and water currents.

I created several color ways to make the patterns versatile. They serve as supporting elements for backgrounds and accents.

Lettering

I hand-lettered the twelve names to appeal to a wide array of people from fishermen to chefs:

Atlantic Croaker
Black Sea Bass
Blue Crab
Butterfish
Grey Triggerfish
Northern Pufferfish
Red Drum
Scup
Spanish Mackerel
Squid
Summer Flounder
Whiting

Testimonial

“Siena was amazing! I can't overstate how great she was to work with and how beautiful the work she did for us was. She was very professional, organized, communicative and stayed on schedule.

“The illustrations themselves are even more beautiful than we could have hoped and she was really good about talking with us to understand the style that we were looking for (a mix between scientifically accurate yet still fun and artsy).

“Siena really took the time to understand our project and the mission of our organization. I would highly recommend working with her and would love to work with her again!”
