Ransom Place Garage

MURAL

Located in a historic Indianapolis neighborhood, the homeowner wanted a bold pop of color to show the life and energy she is investing in the area.

Design Process

Designing for such a garage door with lots of uneven surfaces presented a challenge. Incorporating a lot of curves probably made it extra difficult, but that’s just how I roll!

I played around with several thumbnails to work out a variety of linear compositions. This mural project gave me a chance to experiment with color blocking abstract shapes. I enjoyed the opportunity to try something new. 🤓

After the client picked their favorite, I created a final design in full color. The color choices reflected a rich color palette to make the mural pop. Then it was off to the paint store!

After transferring the design onto the door using the insets as a type of grid, we set to work painting.

Sylva and I worked together and knocked out the whole mural in less than three days. We did have some extra special help from a burgeoning artist.

This was such a joy to work on and the colors turned out amazing! Neighbors loved seeing it come together. Art makes a difference!

Testimonial

“Siena designed and painted an abstract piece for our garage door in downtown Indianapolis. She started with moodboards showing various styles and color options and we decided on a really bright theme with lots of colors and some unusual hues.

“With our color theme in mind, she did thumbnail sketches in pencil, offering us 8 options to get a sense of what overall feel we liked. From the thumbnail, she worked up an entire composition to the scale of our door. We got to see a couple of color variations as it was in process and loved the one she landed on.

“I asked to come along when she purchased paint and watching her work from her design with the paint swatches in hand was a delight. She put together the perfect palette and her knack for getting just the right color was obviously a developed skill.

“Seeing her freehand the design onto the garage door was a marvel - I imagined there must be projectors involved, but she was able to transfer the design just using the panels of the door as a grid.

“Working diligently from morning to evening, it took three days to finish the mural and at the end, it was exactly like the mockup she had provided! Absolutely incredible experience, I am filled with joy every time I approach my garage.”
