Kona Commons

ANIMATION • BRAND IDENTITY • ILLUSTRATION • LETTERING • PATTERN DESIGN

As the one-stop shop of West Hawaii, Kona Commons hired me to create tropical, playfully surreal branding that showed a new perspective of the outdoor mall. I invented humorous and imaginative visuals that are a fresh take on Hawaii motifs.

Brand Identity

In order to appeal to locals and tourists alike, I anchored the brand identity in tropical citrus colors.

By using this color palette, the cohesive visual assets can be mixed and matched across digital platforms to connect with customers in a memorable way.

Pattern Design

The first step was to design a pattern collection for Kona Commons. The patterns stand on their own in website and newsletter usage as well as pairing beautifully with spot graphics.

The main pattern shows a wide array of items available at Kona Commons. For the coordinating patterns, I scanned in ink drawings and digitized them to create textured patterns.

Illustration

Vibrant, playful imagery showing surreal mashups

Parking Lot Banners

I worked with the Marketing Director to develop three playful designs featuring forest and ocean scenes. Look closely and you will find ‘easter egg’ imagery:

Citrus slice sun
Comb ferns
Gyoza dolphins
Frisbee sea turtle
Pencil urchin
Paintbrush trees
Ramen noodle waves
Shell phone
Surfboard shark
School of scissor fish
Toothbrush tree
Umbrella mushrooms

The main campaign included several text slogans reading “Everything from ____ to ____.” The text banners coordinate with the illustrated banners.

Lettering

I hand lettered and vectorized a few of the most visual phrases

Animation

Several illustrations translated into eye-catching motion graphics

Testimonial

“Siena’s art is the perfect companion to the shopping center’s image. This locally-owned and managed center cherishes its island home, and whenever possible incorporates island-relevant designs. The center’s owners are committed to supporting locally-based talent and are thrilled with Baldi’s imagery.”
